Up for review today is Movie Room. It's another entrant into the DVD-site genre, which is pretty crowded these days. However, it's a clean-looking site, which is a nice start. The stats are all pretty standard, with over 1,400 DVD's, two new DVD's daily, etc. At $30 a month, it's definitely not the cheapest option out there, but they do offer a lot of content and updates overall. You have to look at a site like those both compared to a normal paysite, and then compared to other similar DVD sites as well.
The Pros
Lots of content up.
Compared to most any paysite out there, they offer more content here than you could reasonably expect anywhere. Then again, there are other, larger DVD sites out there to compare to, but that doesn't take away from the almost 7,000 scenes they have online here right now.
Usability is good here.
I like the category search feature, which is simple, but gets the job done nicely. You can browse by DVD, or by scene, and filter down to as many categories as you like (lesbian, blonde, big tits, outdoors - yummmmmy). The only thing that was iffy for me were some of the actual categorizations, such as the BBW niche which sometimes featured girls who weighed as much as 130 at most. They do also offer a model search engine and model's index to browse through.
New DVD daily.
As with any other video site like this, they keep on top of updates pretty well. They don't exactly have an update schedule posted, so they make you click through to all the new DVD's, but it looks like a new DVD is posted daily.
Other Good Stuff:
The video options are good enough. They're not spectacular, but you get a couple WMV downloads, plus an iPod/PSP, and of course the streaming player.
The site is very clean, with just a couple ads being the only distraction. I like the design, even though it's almost simple to a fault.
There may be some smaller studios available here that you won't see on other DVD sites.
The Cons
Quality could be better.
When you're competing with so many other DVD sites out there, you have to be the best of the best. When it comes to quality, that's just not the case here. They're a definite step down from what we're used to seeing, both in the downloads, and on the streaming video. When you concentrate solely on videos, I think quality is one of the most important things to work on.
Not as large as other DVD sites.
When you're trying to figure out where to spend your hard-earned money, you have to compare apples to apples. While they offer a ton of content here, there are several DVD sites out there that offer more content. Since they all offer similar material for the most part, the size could make a difference.
Some scenes listed twice.
As I was browsing around, I noticed a few scenes were listed in Italian for some reason (or another similar language). Then, when checking out their category search tool, I found a scene that was listed twice, both in English, and Italian. Now, that can't happen often, but who knows how many duplicates are in here.
Minor Negatives:
It's not too expensive, but it does cost a little more than some of the other DVD sites out there.
Not that you'd really need them, but there are no real extras here. There is a blog, but it mostly just features newer scenes or DVD's.
Bottom Line
A good site overall, but it's not the best in its field.
Movie Room is a really nice site overall, but there are just a few things holding it back from really competing with all the other DVD sites out there. It boils down to quality, size, and price. The video quality needs a little work all around, as there are visible artifacts in both the downloads, and the streaming. Also, it's not as big as other similar sites out there, and even the two new DVD's daily aren't as big as some of the updates out there. Then the price is just on the higher side of average, which doesn't help either. If you had nothing to compare to, I think this site would be near-perfect. However, with so many options in this field, it's tough to overlook even smaller issues.
