Maniac Pass is up for review today, and this is a type of site that we just don't see too often anymore. It's an AVS-type system, with a ton of content spread across over 1,000 little mini sites in the network. All the content is pulled from the same place, so the sites are all pretty similar to each other. They also provide the same content in plain old DVD format if you prefer that route. $30 a month gets you in the door here, which is a little high, but I guess about right.
The Pros
Pretty large site.
When you offer DVD content, you have to think pretty big in terms of numbers for sure. They offer over 6,000 video scenes, which equates to around 1,500 actual DVDs I'm guessing (they don't provide those numbers). So while there's a lot to see, they're definitely not as large as most DVD sites when you add it all together.
DVD updates come pretty often.
They update each week with a few new DVDs pretty consistently, though their new site additions occur much less frequently (once a month or so). I'm not sure if those are related at all, since it seems like they all use pretty much the same content anyway, but at least there is new content coming up regularly here.
The Cons
Search needs improvement.
They have a good shell for the search feature here, though it's really not setup perfectly. They have long lists of great categories all separated out into a few different areas. However, you can't get too crazy and combine certain things together, which is where their Achilles' heel is. So for instance, you can't search for both 69 and lesbian together, since they're from the same category of search options. You can, however, search for both lesbian and garage to see if anything matches both, you know, just in case.
Too confusing with the DVD option AVS site option.
Since it seems like they all pull from a single source of content (the large DVD archive), I'm not sure why they have both an AVS and DVD site setup going on. I would choose one (hint: the DVD option) and run with it, leaving the other off the site completely. It'll clear up a lot of the clutter and allow them to really focus on the site and options to maximize everything.
Non-exclusive content.
As the content is all from DVD stuff here, it's not exclusive. That's pretty much expected on a site like this with how much material there is, but definitely don't come in here looking for anything too unique.
Minor Negatives:
The downloads came in rather slow for me here. The basic browser option was almost unusable, though using a download manager at least got them up to about 1/4 of my usual speed.
They provide info on the DVD as a whole, but do not provide anything for each specific scene. It definitely makes the site feel a little more plain than it needs to.
The quality is just so-so here for me. The pictures are the worst of it as they're on the small side, and definitely seem dated at times. Videos are pretty standard DVD quality, though there's still a little room for improvement on them still I'd say.
Bottom Line
They have a decent amount to see and update regularly, but I'd love to see them clean the site up.
Maniac Pass does okay in terms of numbers and updates, though with their split AVS/DVD setup, they really don't realize the full potential of either. They don't quite compete with normal DVD sites since they have less content, fewer options, and don't update as often. Compared to a normal network of sites, they have too much clutter, lower quality, and nothing that's exclusive. I think their best bet would be to get rid of the whole AVS setup and focus on all the content they have, and then try to compete in the DVD world. As it is, you could have some fun here, but you might be better off heading to a site that offers more for less money in the end.
