(recurring)Big Movies is up for review today, and this is yet another entry into the crowded field of DVD mega-sites. It's no wonder there are so many competitors here since these sites often score well. Big Movies fits right in with the rest with a ton of content, large daily updates, and a low price. What sets these sites apart from each other are the options and features, and often the price as well. At $10 a month, this is about as cheap as they come, which is a great way to get the review started off.
Pretty large collection of DVDs.
You pretty much expect it on a site like this, and thankfully, Big Movies does not disappoint. They currently offer over 8,300 full DVDs, comprised of over 37,000 total video scenes. The huge collection is the main draw in a site like this. It may not be original, but there's no way you've seen everything they have to offer here.
Updates come regularly.
This past week brought 19 new DVDs to the site, averaging out to 2-3 new DVDs per day. It's not quite at the top in terms of the update numbers, but I don't think it's a huge deal. The updates are far larger than most any other type of paysite out there.
They offer all the basics you'd expect in terms of navigation for a DVD site. You can search by pornstars, studios, and a huge list of categories.
The $10 price tag is definitely another huge draw here as well. You can't find too many sites any cheaper out there.
Navigation could still be improved.
While they have all the basics covered, they really don't go above and beyond for the navigation. Most importantly, there's no way to combine the search features into any kind of advanced search. You can only view the lesbian scenes, for instance, but not the lesbian Asian scenes.
Quality isn't great at times.
Actually, most of the time the quality falls below average here unfortunately. Some scenes offer a higher-quality "DVD" version of the clip, but a lot do not. When you're all working with the same source material, I'd say you need to maximize the quality you can get out of the video clips to keep competitive.
Some random video/site/download errors here and there.
There were just a couple of random issues I ran into once in a while. Sometimes, videos didn't offer any download links; I don't know if this was a glitch, or on purpose, but some scenes were basically streaming only. Other times, the videos would be missing files, so neither the downloads or the streaming would work at all. This was definitely a glitch, but not something you want to see.
Content isn't exclusive.
This is another one of those "duh" moments on a site like this, much like the comment on the huge collection. None of the material is exclusive here, as it's all pulled from the same DVDs you can find on most any other DVD site out there.
The scene and DVD descriptions could be beefed up. Actually, only the DVDs offer written descriptions, but they're only a sentence long or so. The scenes only offer the stats, such as a list of stars, etc. with them.
There are a few ads in the member's area which definitely make the site feel a little more cluttered than it needs to be.
The basics are all good, but they fall a little short in a few key areas still.
Big Movies scores well here. They provide a ton of content, big daily updates, and a nice low price. However, most of those things are expected from a DVD site like this, so we start looking beyond the basics and see what they do that's a little extra. Here is where they start to falter. The quality is usually on the low side, even for a DVD site. The search and navigation are decent, but don't provide the customization and full feature set that some other sites offer. Plus, the few random site errors that popped up definitely take the level of professionalism down a notch as well. It's pretty good all around, but if they want to be top dog, they really have to excel (and then some) in every single aspect of the site.
