Intro

Naked Sword is up for review today, and it's a pretty big site that I'm surprised we haven't looked at already. It's basically a gay DVD site (and NOT a PPV site as I thought initially), but they lock down the content pretty well here so that you won't be keeping anything. They have a decent amount to see and update daily, but it's not as large as a lot of the DVD sites we see out there. Plus, they charge you quite a bit at $40 a month, which is more than most paysites can get away with. Hopefully they have some unique studios offering content here at the price, but I'm not really too sure on that.

The Pros

Lots of content up.

As with most DVD sites, there's a lot to see here. They don't give you any stats or anything, but our estimates put them around 2,000 DVDs, which is a pretty good number. Updates come daily, so expect them to continue to grow here.

They add two new DVDs per day for the most part, and that'll sometimes jump up to three on a special day. Hopefully the schedule continues, as they could use the extra content here. Anything to help them stand apart from the crowd is a good thing in my book.

When viewing the DVDs, there are a few different ways to sort and view them, which can come in handy.

The Cons

Video rights are heavily restricted.

You aren't able to download and keep anything here, that's for sure. They have two streaming options (Real Video, which is way outdated, and WMV, which has DRM on it), and a downloadable DRM that has pretty heavy DRM inside. You can only view the video for a single day before you have to get a new license, so you'll have to keep your account active to view the content.

Quality could be better.

The videos are looking a bit dated here unfortunately, and many of the specs are pretty far below what we'd look for on a more current site. They look okay, but could really use a nice bump up to compete with the other DVD sites out there.

Navigation could be expanded a bit.

They have a few categories to go through, and of course you can browse by date or studio, but that's about it. I'd love a much more advanced search feature to narrow content down, and I'd also like to see the ability to browse/search by scene instead of just by DVD.

Minor Negatives:

$40 is quite a bit of money to put down on a site, and I think the price would weigh on me for sure.
For streaming, I'd love to see a newer Flash version offered in browser with lots of features to make viewing the streaming videos easier and quicker.

Bottom Line

Lots to see, but the site and quality feel a little dated.

For $40 a month, I really look for perfection in a site. Unfortunately, I don't feel that Naked Sword has hit that perfection with where they stand currently. The basics are really good with lots of content and daily updates, but I think that's where the fun ends for me. The quality is definitely sub-par, the navigation feels a little too simple, and of course, you can't keep any of the content here. If they need to go that route to keep certain studios on board, I'd like a much more current setup with a nice Flash player, better quality, and more options to find content. What's here now works, it just feels dated and in need of some upgrades.
