Mobile Anilos

Intro

Today we're reviewing the mobile version of Anilos.com, which is a pretty separate site from the main version overall. I'm sure they share the same content, but this one has its own update schedule, much less content, but is optimized for use on a mobile platform. I'll be checking the site out on my computer, as well as on my iPhone 4 over wifi to get the full experience. $25 a month gets you in the door, which gives you access to the both the mobile and main versions of the site.

The Pros

Site works very well in mobile browsers.

You can tell when sites have been designed from the ground up to work on a mobile platform, and that's definitely the case here. Everything fits very neatly into your phone's browser, and even the content is shrunk down to look right. It'll never be perfect, but they're doing pretty well with the tools at hand.

Very nice search feature.

I was pretty surprised to see such a nice search page available on a mobile site. There are a ton of options to choose from that you can combine together to find pretty specific content. This really helps browse around since it's no fun to click through a ton of pages on your phone.

Other Good Stuff:

The content is all original here at least, as it's 100% exclusive on the main site. I assume the only time you will have seen it is on the Anilos.com site if you're been a member there in the past.
Updates come pretty regularly here, with something new added weekly. Last week brought a new photo and video set (both), which is pretty typical.
The quality is pretty good here. They look great on your mobile phone, and even the iPad versions look pretty nice if you're viewing them on your computer for some reason.

The Cons

Smaller collection than main site.

I'm not sure why they separate it out, and do their own updates and additions here that are separate from the main site. However, it makes for a smaller site, since the video collection is about 20% of their overall total.

Photo galleries aren't quite setup right in my opinion.

This is partly a problem of just using a mobile phone to browse a photo gallery. They show 10 thumbs per page by default, and the galleries are big enough that you have to go through a bunch of pages to see them all. You can add more thumbs on each page, but then it takes longer to load.

My main issue here is that they load the entire full-size image (1200x800) and then use a script to shrink it down. That means you have to load the large image on your phone, which may be slow. I wish they had dedicated optimized images for the mobile site, like they do with the videos.

Minor Negatives:

The file sizes that they list for the videos are off for some reason. They are pretty specific, like some kind of script is grabbing that info, so I'm not sure where the problem is there exactly.
All of the "coming soon" sets they show get in the way. I'd go to click and watch one, only to realize it's not online yet. It doesn't say when it's coming or anything, so to me it's just really distracting.

Bottom Line

They've done a pretty good job of creating a fun mobile site here.

It's hard to get terribly excited about a mobile site usually since they're stripped down and much less fancy than actual websites are. However, Mobile Anilos has done pretty well here to balance options vs. clutter to make your experience as good as possible. The content is just as expected, and looks pretty nice on your mobile phone; the videos even look decent on your computer if you download the iPad version. The search is a huge help as well to help narrow things down, as browsing through a ton of pages is never fun on a phone. A few tweaks to the photo galleries would help, and I was disappointed that the collection is quite a bit smaller than their main site. However, I think it's a nice bonus addition to their sites, and it worked better than expected in my book.
