Intro

Sugar VOD is up for review today, and this looks to be a pretty standard VOD site from what I see so far. They offer up a ton of DVDs (I can't tell how many very easily), and you pay a per-minute fee for viewing them in streaming format on their site. There's also a couple other options, such as purchasing a video, or a longer rental, but that's not what we'll be looking at here too much. Packages vary, depending on how much you purchase at once, but $20 or $30 will get you 205 or 310 minutes, respectively.

The Pros

Tons of content up.

As you'd expect, there's a lot to see here. Most DVD sites offer a ton of content, and Sugar VOD is no different. I have no idea how many DVDs they have on their site exactly, but expect numbers in the tens of thousands I presume.

Lots of daily updates.

There are random breaks in updates at times, sometimes for a week or more, but that's not the norm. Usually, several DVDs are added daily, and the last week has brought 64 full DVDs onto the site, which is pretty impressive.

Other Good Stuff:

They have a decent category list here to help narrow things down. It's not the most advanced in the world, but at least it's pretty thorough.
The WMV videos here stream very fast, with almost no waiting time for the video to start, or to jump around in the video.

The Cons

DVDs are the main way to browse; needs some scene selections.

While they have the basics, including dropdown boxes for categories, models, etc., it's all focused on searching DVDs as a whole. The advanced search lets you pick multiple categories (only for the types of sex or locations), but you're still stuck browsing DVDs only. They really, really need to allow you to search and browse specific scenes here. You can only start DVDs at the beginning, and then you have to jump around (with very little preview info) to the scene you're looking for.

Not many viewing options.

PC users get a standard WMV player that plays in your browser, while Mac users evidently get a Silverlight player, perhaps with a few more features. The WMV player is very basic, and offers no features here. I'd expect more from a site that focuses 100% on streaming video.

Minor Negatives:

The list of new movies on the main page aren't new at all. Check out the dates they were added, and you'll wonder (like I did) why they are in that list at all.
They don't give enough of a video preview before you jump in. When you're paying per-minute, you want to know what you're going to be paying for. A better description and a ton more preview pics would go a long way here.

Bottom Line

A fine enough VOD DVD site, but the layout was not my favorite.

When it comes to VOD sites, there are a lot to choose from, and you really have to offer something unique to stand out from the crowd. Unfortunately, Sugar VOD doesn't do that in my opinion. All the basics are there with a large collection, daily updates, and a few ways to browse, but those are all expected. I was surprised at the lack of viewing options, with just a WMV player for PC users. Navigation was also a bit of a pain, with only basic search options, and no ability to browse the scenes at all (just full DVDs). In fact, even the DVD page is a pain in the ass since you can only start a DVD from the beginning, and then search frantically to find the right scene you're looking for (you're paying per-minute after all). I'd mostly look for more options and features here to help set them apart, as the rest is all covered already.
