Intro

Naked Sword is one of those sites with a long history as the site has been around for well over a decade so it's one of the most well established brands in the gay niche. What the site offers is a collection of hardcore gay DVDs from tons of different movie studios including Raging Stallion, Cold, Falcon, Hot Houses, and others. Guests can get pretty good feel for the site and movie collection from the tour pages which has a similar design to how members see things. FYI, for the purposes of this review we're looking at the monthly membership which is the main option here. Note that there is a PPV link on the tour which leads over to their partner AEBN that offers movies on a pay-per-minute basis.

The Pros

Thousands of Full-Length Gay DVDs from Popular Studios.

Naked Sword's biggest selling point is that this is an impressive collection of gay movies from lots of popular studios. If you pull up the studio list it's actually quite large as they have American and international content. The action is hardcore with all of the main popular categories represented. Models seem to cover the whole range of the spectrum as well from pro pornstar men to more amateur looking performers. Both quantity and entertainment value are real pluses for Naked Sword.

Nice Update Pace, Two Full Movies Added Everyday.

DVD and movie sites should be among the fastest updating sites and Naked Sword meets that criteria. They have a dedicated update log with a lengthy history of dated entries and two new full DVDs per day is their standard. Generally for a site like this one new movie per day would work all right based on the industry standards so these guys do better than that. Clearly updating so regularly is what's helped them build up the archive that they now have in place.

Other Good Stuff:

There are some helpful navigation tools like browse by theme (i.e. niche), studio, and a section devoted to various stars. Also, the individual movie pages have hyperlinked details making it easy to click over to related content.
Movie pages have a preview in-browser movie plus still images which will give you a feel for the action before downloading or viewing the whole movie.
Naked Sword has been around for years giving it a track record and history that you don't see from a lot of other porn sites out there.

The Cons

Movies Have DRM Restrictions on the Downloads.

For most surfers this will find this to be the main sticking point about Naked Sword's set-up. While the movies are downloadable they have DRM which means that even after downloading you are prompted to enter login info in order to view the files. Once your membership in cancelled you can't view the movies any longer. Essentially this is the equivalent of a site being streaming only so that's the best way to consider it.

Video Quality is Average, Lower Than Excpected for a DVD Site.

For a DVD movies site Naked Sword hasn't really kept pace in terms of movie quality or specs. The WMV files which are downloadable come in at 1500k 720x480 which is lower than I'm used to seeing from most sites nowadays. Because this is movie content the lacking quality is more impactful than it would be at another type of site like an amateur site for instance. An upgrade to the specs would make a big difference here.

Minor Negatives:

Navigation options could be improved especially the model 'stars' page and search tool which are way underdeveloped for this large of a collection.
There is no Flash streaming format as they have WMV and Real Player which seem a bit outdated especially for a site where the downloads are DRM'd.

The other

While the movie downloads are DRM protected the download speeds are still good. I got around 800-850KB/sec and my download manager worked well too (software: IDM).

Bottom Line

Naked Sword has a large archive of gay DVDs however the download restrictions are a negative.

Naked Sword has a couple of characteristics that stand out as significant things surfers will want to take note of. The site's long history and huge archive of gay DVDs is the biggest thing working in its favor as it is a quality collection that covers all sorts of hardcore action. What really hurts the site is that they seem stuck in the past when it comes to having the DRM restrictions on the videos and the video quality itself isn't up to par with today's standards. These things really do impact the site's value significantly.
