Wasteland is a site that I'm pretty familiar with. TBP has done reviews on this site for many years so this is a full re-review. The tagline here is "The Darker Side of Desire" and it's a BDSM and Fetish focused site that went online way back in 1995. So this is one of those paysites that goes back to the earliest days of internet porn.
The Goods:
- Well Established BDSM/Fetish Site. Wasteland has been around a long time and has name recognition in the business. They've stuck to their BDSM/Fetish concept since the beginning and feature content covering everything from hardcore bdsm to more soft core fetish shoots.
- Huge Collection of Pictures. The picture galleries are the centerpiece of the content. The main sections include Wasteland Original Photos and the Dark Garden Photo Gallery. Wasteland Original is self-explanatory and the Dark Garden is a large well rounded group of material from a mix of photographers/sources. Secondary level picture sections include things like party pics, Asian/Japanese bondage, weekly models, and more.
- Newest Vids are High Resolution. Although this applies to just the newest movies it is an important step that they've taken. The most recent movies are in ultra high-res WMV and QT formats. There are still lower quality files too for faster downloading and in-browser Flash too. These are impressive quality levels and format choices for additions going forward.
- BDSM Extras, Articles, Resources, Etc. The content sections really do well beyond just pictures and videos. The member's main page has a whole host of links to material like forum/chat, BDSM 101, fiction, resources, contests and more.
The Bads:
- Could Use More Original Movies. There really is a big gap between sheer number of pictures in the collection and the number of Wasteland's original movies. Considering they've been online for such a long time it's hard to understand why they don't have a huge database of videos.
- Many Videos are Average Quality. While I highlighted the high quality on the newest movies in my 'Good' bullet points the fact is that quality hasn't been a strength of the movies over the years. The bulk of the vids are just plain average quality which is an important fact about the content.
- Design/Update Info Could be Improved. The overall site design hasn't changed in years and it's fairly plain looking. There are separate sections for the content but no way to search by type of fetish action, models, etc. Also, while updates are logged they don't date-stamp the individual galleries and videos on the site.
Conclusion:
Wasteland is a site with intrinsic values because of it's established history. They certainly do have a large mix of content including a big ol' amount of pictures. There are an okay number of videos plus the extras that round it out to a fully developed BDSM site. Finally, the price has been $34.95/mo for as long as I can remember which is certainly on the expensive side.
