Sugar VOD is an on-demand video service that offers members thousands of DVD titles for their pay-per-view enjoyment. You can join their site for free and then purchase a package of minutes that you can use when viewing their movies. As is usually the case with sites like this, you can browse their entire collection without paying a dime, so that’s a good place to start and see if their collection meets your needs.
The Goods –
They’ve got a good-sized collection of DVDs online. There are currently over 4,000 to choose from. They cover all the major hardcore niches and a few I wasn’t even expecting to see, like “Holiday”. They have plenty of studios and stars covered so no matter what your interest, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy on this large site.
Getting around is easy enough. Their Advanced Search lets you search by dozens of combinations including fields like performer, director, studio, categories, and ratings. Match any or all of the words in your keyword search. Also, once you’re on a title’s page they make it easy to jump to the other movies by that performer or director. The design is clean so getting around is no problem.
The videos looked pretty good. The “super” quality clips play at over 1000k and look sharp. They’re not quite DVD quality, which surprised me a bit, but overall they looked clear.
The Bads –
As usual, the cost on pay per view video sites can add up fast. At best here, you’re paying 7 cents per minute, at worst you’re paying 24 cents per minute. So, you’re paying between $6 and $21 to view an entire 90 minute long DVD. When you consider that you can join a standard paysite for $20-$30 a month and get access to their entire library of hundreds, or even thousands, of titles, Sugar VOD is a tough sell.
Very little information is provided about the movies. You get some basic product information, like the year the movie was released and a star list, but no description and no preview pictures. I was really surprised that they don’t even offer vidcaps for their scenes.
The videos are all basically streaming-only. Some have a DivX download option, but those downloads expire a month after being downloaded. What that means is that you cannot keep these movies indefinitely. They either stream or expire, so you can’t build any kind of video library on this site.
None of the content here is exclusive. That should be expected on a video site like this. You’re coming here to find big name studios and stars, not anything original.
Conclusion –
Sugar VOD has a couple “Cons” but they’re nothing that you won’t find on any other pay-per-view site. The price, streaming, and exclusivity issues are by no means unique to Sugar VOD, they’re just the nature of the genre. So, if you’re looking for a ppv site, Sugar VOD is right there with the rest of them. Getting around is easy enough and they have a large library from which to choose. This is a good join if you have specific interests in mind that Sugar VOD can deliver.
