"With a so-so site and expensive rentals, it just doesn't work as well for me as I'd hoped." |

Up for review today is Strictly Broadband, which is a DVD site that offers up movies in exchange for PPV tickets. Prices are in British Pounds, so those of you in the USA have to just about double the numbers I'm giving you currently. One movie scene rental for seven days is 8 Pounds, or just under $16. They have other packages as well, say 10 movie scene rentals for 50 pounds, or just under $99. You can also pay double that amount and get to watch the video for a full year instead of a week. Needless to say, you'll spend more here than on other DVD sites, but the hope is that they can offer some unique studios that the other sites can't offer. You can browse around the tour pretty well without logging in, so you can see exactly what they offer before buying anything.
The goods:
- Lots of content up. They don't really give you any actual numbers anywhere on the site, but our guesses put them somewhere around 4500 full DVD's. Figure in that each DVD has several scenes, and it's a huge site compared to most paysites out there. It's about an average size for a DVD site, and probably a little small in terms of PPV sites out there.
- Updates seem to come regularly. They don't give any dates either, which is frustrating, but the content count does grow. Who knows how often exactly, so you'll just have to keep an eye out.
The bads:
- Can get expensive. At $15 per movie for a week-long scene rental for us in the USA, or possibly $10 at best if you buy in bulk, it's just plain expensive. I assume you can buy a full DVD at the store for $30 or less, so you can only rent half the DVD for a week for the same price here. I'm not too sure if the extra studios are worth the cost, unless you're a true connoisseur here.
- Lots of buffering for me. For some reason, downloads seemed a little slow on my end today. Videos had to buffer quite a bit which really ruined the experience. You can't download them fully first, so you're stuck with the buffering if you run into that problem.
- Navigation could be better. The layout here just doesn't work for me for some reason. They have a list of categories, which is usually a great way to browse, but the way it's setup is just a little different. I think it's a little cluttered for me, though at least there are a lot of options there.
- No scene info available. When you're paying per scene, I think this is a pretty big omission. They give you a description of the DVD, but not of the actual scenes for some reason. All you get is a title and one preview thumb to base your decision on.
Conclusion:
Overall, though there's a lot to see, this is a tough one to throw a full recommendation behind. With the high price and the so-so site, I just think you could do better on some of the other sites. It's not awful, but I guess it's not for me. Thankfully you can browse through everything before you give them some cash, so I'd say take a look around and see if something is available here that'd work for you and go from there!
