Skin Video is a DVD download site with movies from a wide range of niche categories. The site is geared towards a general audience looking for a well balanced collection of hardcore videos. The guest tour will let you know exactly what they have to offer as that part of the site allows for browsing of the entire collection. The categories, scene, and DVD pages give non-members a chance to see the totality of their movie library before signing up. Spending a few minutes bumping around should tell you if they have what you're looking for.
The Goods:
- Lots of Movies, Many Niches/Fetishes. Skin Video has a sizable collection of movies which is vital for any DVD site of this kind. As expected they are non-exclusive titles from a mix of different porn studios. A whole host of niches and fetishes are represented from the standard popular categories on down to the more micro-fetishes (things like Goth, Insertions, Tattoo, Rimming, etc.)
- Downloadable Formats & Flash Streaming. The movies are available in several formats that include AVI/WMV (one per movie, formats vary) downloadable files (full-scene files) and in-browser Flash. The Flash works well with the ability to stream the entire scene or jump to different sections within the shoot. The other formats for the movies are iPod and PSP.
- Niche & DVD Category Breakdown. These guys have broken the collection down into five main sections: Fetishes, Sex Acts, Style, Age, and Body Features. Each of these has sub-sections of movies and this is the main navigation tool. It's a straightforward set-up although there is a lot of crossover of movies being in multiple sections. A keyword search is the other main browsing function.
- Low Monthly Price. The monthly rate of $14.95/mo puts Skin Video near the low end of paysite rates. That's always a plus that's worth pointing out. Their trial recurs at that same rate which is good to see as well.
The Bads:
- Could Use More Download Options. The way they have things set up with AVI/WMV the files must be full saved before being played. There isn't any way to stream the movies in a stand-alone media player right from the site. More quality options would also help as the quality level of the movies is fairly average.
- Performer/Studio Info Not Provided. These are specifics which I just expect from a DVD/movie site. Skin Video doesn't list the model information or the studio details for their movies. Instead they just stick to basics like a title, niche tags, and a short written description.
- No Model Index, Avg Navigation. This goes hand-in-hand with my previous point about the lack of model and studio info. This collection desperately needs a model index and browse-by-studio tools to provide more ways to access the material. I can't remember the last movie site of this size I've seen that doesn't have either of these.
- No Update Specifics Posted. There is a "New" tab on the main navigation header and that page lists the new movies on the site. The main problem is that they don't have any dates on the movies and this page has no specific dates shown either. The tour does claim updates every hour but they should provide some sort of details for members on that.
Conclusion:
Skin Video's has both some positives and negatives that are important to note. It's great that they have a lot of downloadable movies at a low monthly cost however things like navigation and movie details could be improved upon. They took the time to put together a good sized number of movies but have taken some shortcuts on the site infrastructure which makes it a less user-friendly interface that it otherwise could be.
