Retro Raw is up for review today, and it takes us back to some porn videos from decades ago. These have to be some of the first commercial porn flicks to have seen the light of day. There's lots of foreign stuff here, and many of them say they were transferred from archival print, whatever that means. It all boils down to some DVD or video rips here of porn from years past. It's 15 Euros a month, which turns into quite a bit more for us Americans and our lousy dollars.
The goods:
- Some unique, older flicks. Definitely their claim to fame here is the collection they offer, which you probably won't see too many other places. I guess there's not a huge market for it, but they're genuine porn flicks, and offer something different for sure.
- Updates do come. They may be slower than usual, but they get here. The site has grown since my last visit for sure, which is good to see.
- Lots to see here. For a niche site, when you offer 78 DVD's, you're doing pretty good for yourself. This content obviously isn't in mass production or anything, so they do alright.
- Video specs are good. Granted, the video cameras of the time didn't take the best pictures, but at least the specs they use to rip the content are decent.
The bads:
- Navigation is awful. You're really just stuck going page by page with just a few DVD's listed on each one. There are no numbered page links, so you have to use the next and previous buttons only.
- Updates are a bit slow. I'd say a new DVD is put up every 10-14 days on average, though it varies. Also remember to check the dates as they're in DD-MM-YYYY format, which is a little backwards for some (I thought they hadn't updated in a while at first glance).
- Only WMV files offered. The have two quality options at least, but anybody who has issues with WMV should make sure they'll work for them.
- Downloads are a bit slow. The files aren't huge, but download speeds came in about 1/3 of our normal download speed, which wasn't too impressive. It made even shorter clips take a while to fully download, which is required before you can view them for some reason.
Conclusion:
Retro Raw provides a unique experience, and they do decent considering the content they're working with. The size surprised me most, and they do update as well (though it's a bit slow of course). The site itself could use a little work to make navigation easier, but it gets the job done. You have to be in the right mood for this stuff, but it's a nice niche site overall.
