Ah, it's always nice to take a stroll down memory lane whether it's a yearbook, photo album, or good ol' classic porn movies. As a reviewer it's pretty rare that a site with vintage/classic content comes onto our To Do list so I welcome the occasion. The vintage niche covers a wide range of periods and styles so I should clarify that Retro Raw focuses solely on movie content from the golden age of porn movies.
The Goods:
- Fun Classic Downloadable Movies. The concept is simple but enjoyable. I'm not really into vintage porn title but even I find it fun to watch some of these scenes. Sticking to just downloadable movies is an excellent choice for a vintage porn site. The action is a nice mix of hardcore including one-on-one, groups, interracial, and more. While it's not an overly large collection there is some decent variety.
- Movies Have Update Info Posted. Each movie does have a date stamp to let members know when it was added to the site. In addition to that the title, a written description, and preview pics for the different scenes are shown. There isn't a dedicated update log for the site but that's not vital since they do date all the movies and you can scroll thru them chronologically.
- Front/Back Box Covers for All Vids. Of all the info posted about the movies this is my favorite bit. It's cool to see the DVD box cover which include pic collages of the action and performers. Each half of the box cover is shown in thumbnail format and can be enlarged with a mouse click.
The Bads:
- Basic Navigation & Categorization. The navigation is really something that hurts Retro Raw. The movies are posted chronologically, by box cover, or by a "sitemap" which lists titles alphabetically. No categorization is in terms of niche, time period, or performers. Also, when downloading movie files I was unable to navigation anywhere. I had to wait until the full file was finished saving. This is something I've run into on a small number of other sites and it's incredibly annoying.
- Could Use More Movie/Performer Info. This kind of dovetails with my points about the helpful box covers and difficult navigation. While I like the box covers I wish the site operators would post specific performer, studio, year, and niche info about the movies. Also, they should be made clickable to jump to similar style movies. I found the site less enjoyable and more difficult to browse since these specifics aren't provided.
- Slow Update Pace. The updates do get added regularly. The pace however is not stellar with 2-3 movies per month. It would be nice to see them bulk up the site with faster updates. At a minimum a site of this kind should have 1 movie per week.
Conclusion:
One area I didn't touch on yet is the video quality. The actual WMV file properties are good but the fact that we're dealing with classic movies means you're not going to get really sharp videos. Taking all this into account the quality is okay and not good or bad enough to be listed on my bullet point list. Note also that there is a discount price here for TBP at 14.95 (though it is in Euros).
