Who doesn't like Penthouse baby! It was the first dirty magazine I ever saw, sitting buried on a hill near my house. I poured over that thing as much as possible and got some good glimpses of the female body. Here we are a couple years later (okay, a couple decades later maybe), and we're taking a look at the Penthouse website which is up for review today. These magazine sites have a tough time making the online transition since their collections are so large, and for some reason the quality can be lacking at times. Hopefully that's not the case here, and for $25 you can get inside and see for yourself.
The goods:
- Huge, awesome photos. Holy shit, I can't believe there are some similar sites out there putting out the pictures they do. Take a note or two from Penthouse's site and start offering up some 4000x3000 pictures that look awesome and blow your competition away. I was definitely surprised at the quality, and commend them for moving forward with their website like that! Even their oldies content is this large, which is even more surprising.
- Lots of exclusive content. They have Penthouse Pet galleries going back to 1973, plus a lot of online-exclusive content to check out. Add in some movies, DVD's, and all the extra content, and of course there's a lot to see here.
- Daily updates. A new photo gallery or video is added each and every day, and at worst you'll be stuck with a new behind-the-scenes video. That definitely helps keep the site fresh and growing nicely.
- Lots of extra magazine content. Everything from Penthouse Letters, to stories, to Penthouse Forum Letters, to Ask Dr. Z can be found on the site. It gives for a lot more exclusive content to check out, especially if you actually do like the magazine "for the articles."
The bads:
- Video quality needs work. Considering the pictures were looking so good, I was disappointed to see the videos were at a pretty low encoding rate. They didn't look that great, and definitely weren't up to par with what I was expecting (or even a bare minimum really).
- A nice, full-featured search would do wonders. They have so much content here that it can be tough to find something specific. They've done an okay job keep things as clutter-free as possible, but a well-thought-out search engine would be a great help in finding things you're interested in.
- Not all galleries have such great specs. Some of them drop down to 1600x1200, and others go down even further. Hopefully going forward, all the new content will be high-resolution of course, but some of the older stuff doesn't quite live up to the hype.
Conclusion:
Penthouse definitely surprised me here, in a good way of course. They have a lot to see, update daily, have good-looking pictures (the new stuff at least), and somehow managed to make their site usable despite having so much content. The price is middle-of-the-road, and the video quality isn't great, but I can look past those two things and enjoy what they do offer. It's a pretty nice site overall, and worth a look if you like their material.
