There are only a handful of magazine publications with the history of a Penthouse. Because of this there are certain expectations I have from a company like this when it comes to their official website. Namely I'm looking for some sort of archive of their past magazine material (pics, vids, articles, etc.) plus new content that helps to round out the site. So with that thought process in mind here is what I found at Penthouse.com.
The Goods:
- Penthouse Pets, Letters, Etc. Penthouse Pets and Letters are the most well known things Penthouse offers. The site features an archive of Pets from the present back to 1973. It is interesting to see porn from back through the years. Members also get access to Penthouse Letters, Ask Dr.Z, additional photo sets, videos, and more. It's a pretty full site although it's fair to say the emphasis is on pictures over videos as far as the content distribution goes.
- Some Ultra-High Res Pics. High res pictures are advertised on the guest tour and there are some impressive galleries available for members. Newer galleries have huge 4000k pics along with other impressive 3000k, 2000k, and a few more decent quality levels. The high res pics are worth mentioning and are a real asset even though they're a small percentage of the galleries. Zip files are offered on all galleries across the site.
- Behind the Scenes Videos. The videos section has three main components and I found the Behind-the-Scenes to be the most interesting. The other two sections are Penthouse Full Length Movies and Full Length Hardcore DVDs. Behind-the-scenes is the type of material that fans of a publication like this will most likely find most interesting. That section is pretty sizeable and they're updating it regularly.
- Daily Update Calendar. Updates are a strength here as they have monthly calendars detailing and linking to the daily addition. The updates are a nice blend of new stuff to all different parts of the site. There is even a monthly summary that breaks down how much content pieces were added to each part of the site.
The Bads:
- Many Average Quality Pictures. The large percentage of average quality pictures is a big negative for a couple of reasons. First, the guest tour is so up front about selling their ultra high-resolutions pictures and it's disappointing that there are only a small number of those galleries in the member's areas. Secondly, we're talking about Penthouse which is a professional publication that has been producing its own photo sets for decades. With this in mind they really should have a majority of their pictures available in hi-res formats.
- Average Vid Quality & Options. When clicking on a video to play it the file initially opens with an in-browser streaming set-up. From there it's possible to save the files to your computer. File size information isn't offered although the clip length is. The overall quality leaves something to be desired.
Conclusion:
Penthouse has all the components in place that are needed by the official site of such a company. Pictures are the focus of things although there are a reasonable number of videos including a blend of full movies and behind-the-scenes movies. Content quality is the one area where fans might be disappointed simply because the number of high-res galleries is quite small.
