Movie Room has been a DVD-based site that was a long time in the making. It comes from some people who know their way around the adult business, but this is their first actual paysite out the door. Hit up their tour and you can get a pretty good idea of what they're all about, with the ability to browse around the site and check out some samples. Membership is a little on the high side compared to other similar sites, but not out of ordinary at $30 a month.
The goods:
- Videos look nice. The 640x480 2000kbps WMV videos are at least on par with, if not better than, most of the video sites out there we look at. Once in a while you can see some artifacts with a lot of movement, but they look pretty good overall.
- New DVD added daily. It's not as high as our best-updating sites, but a new DVD a day is much better than most any other paysite out there. Figure in at least 4-6 scenes per DVD, and that's how many new clips you'll get.
- Lots of videos up. Though it may not be as big as other similar sites yet, 727 DVD's is nothing to be ashamed of. They'll be over 1,000 DVD's within a year's time, which adds up to a good bit of content.
The bads:
- A bit more expensive than others. Normally for all you get here, the $30 price tag wouldn't bother me a ton. Unfortunately for them, there are a few cheaper DVD sites out there that they compete with. Knowing what's out there may hold you back just a little from this one.
- Downloads came about half speed. Download speed is one of those things a site like this has to be completely on top of. Both times I've visited Movie Room, the downloads only come about half speed. When you're talking about movies totaling in the gigabytes (1.61 gigabytes for the latest one I'm watching), that's a huge problem.
- Not as large as other sites. Again, charging a little more and offering a little less just isn't going to get you to the top of the rankings. They offer a ton of content overall, but there are sites out there that offer more.
Conclusion:
Being a semi-late-comer to this whole DVD genre, they have a lot of pretty stiff competition out there. On its own, the site is quite good all around. There's a lot to see, they update daily, their navigation is pretty dang good, and the videos look nice. The one thing holding them back is their competition which provides similar features and content, and maybe more content overall at a slightly lower price. This site is a great join in most all regards, but where you stick around long-term may be a different choice for the time being.
