Who hasn't heard of Hustler before? We've looked at their official site quite a few times over the last couple of years, and it used to be an awesome deal at $10 a month. They recently redesigned everything, and in the process bumped the price way up to $35 a month which is now on the very expensive side. The site looks great thankfully, but I assume their content is quite similar to before, so I'm not sure if the huge price increase will be worth it.
The goods:
- Tons of content up. The first main section (and one of the coolest) is all the Hustler magazines they have available to browse. Right now they have all the current issues going way back to March of 2000, including all photo galleries, articles, etc. This alone is just huge. Their movies section is good as well with quite a few pages of full DVD's available.
- The site looks great. They've really streamlined both the look and navigation of the site making it much better overall. It feels very current instead of dated for sure. Finding your way around the site isn't such a clusterfuck anymore either, which is definitely appreciated.
The bads:
- Quality is hit and miss all around. I think the main problem is that most of their stuff was originally made for magazines, and scanning them in just doesn't quite look as good as digital cameras do these days. Videos could use some work as well unfortunately, especially from a big name like Hustler who has the resources to really make things shine.
- DRM on videos. It's a silent DRM thing where you never really have to accept the terms, but check the properties and you'll see that videos only play for a few days before they need a new license. You can also play them in your browser, but what fun is that?
- Price jumped hugely to $35 a month. $10 a month was an awesome deal for so much content. We looked past the little issues and recommended it highly. For now, the high price tag commands a premium site, and I'm not quite sure if they're delivering. They offer a ton of stuff, but you have to do most everything right in this price range.
Conclusion:
I like the new changes, and if the price was the same as last time I'm sure things would remain similar. Unfortunately they more than tripled the price, and that really hurts the value score here. All their little quality and DRM issues now become a bigger factor since there are other sites out there charging less and offering more options. It's still a nice site for Hustler fans, but I can't give it a full recommendation these days.
