Intro

Hot Movies is a gigantic VOD pay-per-minute movie site. For me it's the leader as far as streaming DVD sites go since it's been around for so many years and has such a massive database of movies. If you're looking for a particular movie, studio, or pornstar then they're probably in here. Most likely they have lots of stuff you haven't heard of or seen before too. Their PPV system is straightforward as they have packages ranging from 10 minutes up to 1000 minutes or pay-as-you-go. Many different worldwide currencies and languages are available as this site is truly international.

The Pros

Massive DVD/Movie Archive, Possibly the Biggest Anywhere.

Without a doubt the best asset of a VOD site like this is the archive of movies they can provide users. Hot Movies sets the bar in this realm by having a gigantic database featuring every type of porn movies from tons of studios. It doesn't matter how you go about browsing the content whether it%u2019s the list of categories, studios, stars, or series there is just tons and tons of content available. I wouldn't really know what to say to users who couldn't find what they're looking for here.

Useful Navigation Features; Browse, Search & Star Index.

When you're dealing with this much content the navigation tools are crucial. These guys have useful ones in place with the fundamentals covered with browse by niche, star, series, or director. Keyword and advanced searches are also available as are pornstar and director indexes along with personal feature like favorites, save for later, etc. Good details are provided on the movie pages with box cover, studio, star, director, run time, release year, and a written description.

Streaming Player Works Well, Silverlight & WMV Options.

For streaming sites like this the ease of use of the player is mostly what I'm looking at. Hot Movies has taken steps to upgrade their player and add more options. The newest addition is a Silverlight which works very nicely as it buffers/streams quick, allows for immediate jumping ahead, and provides additional movie details below the movie window. They also have an in-browser WMV stream (this is their original older set-up) and you can also stream in a standalone media player.

Other Good Stuff:

Account details are easy to manage on their "Account Center" page. Users can see their viewing history, update account details, create a custom page, etc. Amount of minutes remaining is always prominently shown which is also helpful.
Information on the pricing packages are clearly stated so you can see what all the options are. They do have a nice variety to choose from and the numerous currency choices are a plus for international users.
Updates are made constantly as they have Recently Added and New Releases pages with logs of the new DVDs.

The Cons

Average Video Quality, Ultra/Mega Levels Seem Standard.

Obviously as a video-on-demand streaming site you're not going to get downloads so that's a given. Beyond that though there is room for higher quality movies as the specs on these is pretty standard for all the players topping out at around 2000k 640x480 or so. They have multiple quality levels (usually 3 or 5) depending on the age of a movie however none are pushing towards high-definitions levels. I think ratcheting up the quality would really add further value of the collection.

Model Index is Largely Text Only, Few Stars with Pictures.

There are a couple of navigation tools that seemed a bit underdeveloped. The biggest such items is the model index. Aside from the main popular stars with full thumbnails they have text names only for the vast majority of performers. Only a small percentage have a mouse-over thumb image that'll bring up a preview picture. They also don't date-stamp all the movies in the archive showing when they were added to the site. The newer ones do have update info but I would have liked to have seen each one with these details posted.

Minor Negatives:

Some movies are Premium Titles (new releases, etc.) that cost your account 1.5 or 2.0 minutes for every 1 minute watched. Streaaing rentals are additional cost as are WMV downloads which are DRM protected rentals.
I suspecet some users might not have the Silverlight softward installed which you'll need to use their best player. Silverlight is a Flash-like software.
There are some upsells in the member's area for other paysites, products, services, etc.

The other

There is an Exclusive Movies section with several hundred titles. The movies are from various studios and production years however they don't give any further details on the exclusivity other than them being separated into that section.

Bottom Line

A massive archive of full DVD movies available in a streaming pay-per-minute VOD set-up.

Hot Movies is perhaps the largest collection of DVD movies which makes for a nice foundation for a VOD site like this. The sheer quantity is the biggest selling point and then they do have navigation and video viewing features that work well in this set-up. Aside from the obvious lack of downloads since it's a pay-per-view site they could still increase the video quality as thing are fairly average in that regard. For surfers who prefer per-minute viewing this is one of the most complete sites around.
