BOTTOM LINE:

"Like other AVS's Hentai Key is a mix of good and bad, but in this case it's all hentai/anime focused."

AVS's are unique creatures with their own rules that give them have a different feel than a normal paysites or reality networks. An AVS gives members access to a collection of independent sites that usually number in the hundreds or thousands. The AVS itself sets guidelines for how much content each site must have to be a part of the service. Most AVS are targeted at a general porn audience with all kinds of niches so Hentai Key is unusual in that it is geared towards the very specific hentai/anime niche. I give them credit for bringing this type of service to this narrow niche.

The most vital part of any AVS is the site selection. As is typical of these services the quality level of the sites varies greatly from one to the next. The best sites have large amount of interesting videos and galleries and then there are the bottom level sites where four basic galleries are posted. Sites are organized into these categories: Hentai, Anime, Movies, Games, Manga, Toons, Artist, 3D, and Yaoi. Those titles give you an idea of the type of material found across the network. In order to avoid having to see many of the lower quality sites I found it much easier to browse using a couple other sections: Top 100 Sites and Top Ranked sites. The Top 100 are based on hits/login data while the Top Ranked are by member scores on a 10-point scale. I found the rating system to be an essential time saver; the scores usually give pretty accurate readings on how much good content a site has. Without the ratings navigation and browsing the sites would be a huge pain. Right now (as of Jan '06) there are about 35 sites with a rating of 7 or higher. Of the other 400+ sites there are lot of 6's and below including many rated in the 2-3 range. Those low score ones usually only have the bare minimum content requirement met with four galleries.

Content quality and style consistency aren't something you should go looking for from an AVS. The content comes from all over so the content quality and formatting is going to vary from site to site. Really it's best to look at this as a variety pack of hentai and anime porn. It's a whole lot of stuff from all sorts of places which is just the nature of an AVS service. Quantity is definitely the biggest selling point these guys have to offer.

One trend I saw was that many bottom level sites had similar formatting like one dude did a bunch of them but many of the best sites had individual designs. None of the solo sites overwhelmed me with their layouts, many are pretty raw. Updates are also varied with some sites updating regularly and others remaining stagnant.
