Intro

Gay Star Network is a big ol' collection of niche sites with a focus on hardcore downloadable videos. For straight content this company has Pornstar Network aka Brain Pass and this Gay Star Network is also known as Male Unit (same network, different name). The guest tour here is pretty much an open book where visitors can look through the sites, model index, niches, video pages, etc. and get a real feel for what's available. Spending a few minutes there will be quite informative and let you know if they have the type of guys and scenes you're interested in.

The Pros

Network of Hardcore Gay Content, Nice Mix of Themes & Guys.

As a network there are about one-and-a-half dozen sites included with hardcore guy/guy action dominating the collection ranging from one-on-one to groupsex. The men themselves hit on different sub niches like twinks, muscular, mature, etc. Twinks, big dick, latin guys, bi-sex are some of the individual site concepts. This is one of those networks though that also functions like one big site with browse tools for the whole collection.

Lots of Content Available, Focus Really on Video Content.

Videos dominate Gay Star Network as they have over a thousand scenes in all. The photo content plays more of a secondary role with regards to how many galleries are in place (a couple hundred) and the updates which are noticeably less frequent than the videos. All this is fine with me since most surfers will be looking for the videos anyways.

The set-up here is one of those crossover networks where they do have a listing of the individual sites but for the most part the main navigation tools allow users to browse it as one singular collection. They have a Gaystar model index, niche categories, network wide update log, and DVD and studio sections which make navigation fairly straightforward.

Other Good Stuff:

Videos are available in full-scene WMV downloads along with MP4 mobile files and in-browser Flash streaming. Photo galleries have zip downloads available.
Individual video/DVD pages have lots of information on the content inlcuding written summaries, stars, studio, length in minutes, date added, preview thumbnails, etc.

The Cons

Average Video Quality, Could Use Higher-Res & More Formats.

When it comes to the video options these guys have covered the fundamentals but not gone beyond that. WMV full-scene downloads have specs around 2000k 720x480 and they look okay as does the Flash streaming. There's certainly room for them to raise the specs on the downloads and offer a higher-res option or even include an additional format choice. Consistency is what they do best here but they aren't going to overwhelm you with quality or range of choices.

Mixed Bag of Content, Somewhat All Over the Board.

From what I can tell this seems to be a mixture of exclusive and non-exclusive content. Certainly there is DVD content from different studios which can be found under the Studios tab. While I noted in my positives the many different themes I think some users might find the collection to be hit-and-miss depending on what they're into.

Minor Negatives:

Download speeds were only okay for me at around 450-500kb/sec. Movies can be sizable at around 250-850MB so it can take a few minutes to save them.
Some of the men in the Gaystar model index don't have preview pictures up. Also, members can post feedback and comments on the content however I didn't see many entries or activity there at all.
There are some upsells in the member's area including banner ads for other sites and DVD upsells.

Gay Star Network is also know as Male Unit. It's the same network and collection just under another name.

Bottom Line

A large video network with all sorts of hardcore content & models available.

The biggest strengths of Gay Star are the amount of content and the fact that it really focused on hardcore videos. In getting there they do have a bit of a grab bag of content with more amateur looking shoots alongside studio style stuff. One thing they could do is ratchet up the video quality and options. They have decent and consistent options but there's room for more with regards to that. Overall they continue to update regularly although as with most networks some of the sites are active with others not getting attention.
