Intro

Gay Hot Movies is up for review today, and of course it's the sister site (errr, the brother site) of Hot Movies, which serves up a ton of DVDs in a PPV style. The site here is almost identical, with the exception of the type of movies you'll find here. You buy a package of minutes and can then view to your heart's content (and wallet's content). It's one of the largest sites of this type out there, so there should be plenty to see overall. You can also rent movies for a week or a month, of course for an added fee. A standard package would be $20 for 200 minutes, though it can get cheaper if you buy more at a time.

The Pros

Huge collection available.

Considering they offer only gay content here, and their numbers top 15,000 DVDs, there's a shitload of content to see here. Most straight DVD sites don't have that much content, so the numbers here are really, really good overall.

Decent navigation features.

They offer all of the basics you'll need to help filter the content down here. You can browse by categories, models, studios, etc., and then filter them down from there usually as well. It's a little confusing since the design isn't quite up to par, but once you figure it out, it works nicely.

Updates come pretty regularly.

It looks like they add a few new DVDs every week, which no doubt is how they got their huge numbers here. I don't know if there's a set schedule or anything, but they seem to come pretty consistently at least.

Other Good Stuff:

They have several different ways you can view the streaming videos, which is nice to see since you can't download them at all.

The Cons

Quality is just okay.

When you're competing with so many other DVD sites out there, you really have to be at the top of your game in most areas of the site. Granted, the gay aspect here is a little unique, but the video quality could use a little work still.

Design could use a refresher.

It really detracts from the whole feel of the site with the current design that looks pretty dated to me. At least the site functions pretty well, but updating the graphics would go a long way in the "feel good" category.

Scene setup could be better.

It depends on which of their streaming videos you choose, but sometimes it's pretty hard to tell where one scenes starts and another ends. You're basically streaming an entire DVD at times, and it's up to you to jump around accordingly.

Minor Negatives:

Firefox users may have troubles watching the WMV streaming videos. A quick trip back to IE will fix this, but it's still annoying.
If you're inactive for even a little while, the site seems to log you out quicker than most, which requires you to re-enter all your login info.

Bottom Line

A huge gay DVD archive that does okay despite seeming pieced together.

I think calling Gay Hot Movies pieced together is the best way I can describe it. They have a ton of content and pages to work with, so I think change comes slow here overall. The site looks pretty dated, and that flows through to the video quality that's just okay in today's world. However, they have some newer technology as well with Silverlight streaming (actually three different streaming options), a decent search, and more. If they could get in and redesign the whole thing, I think they'd bring themselves up far and beyond what most similar sites are doing out there. They have big numbers, and that really helps set them apart. It's a nice collection as long as you don't mind a few aspects feeling a little dated.
