GameLink is up for review today, and every time I hear that name, I don't think porn for some reason. Maybe it's my growing up with video games that makes me go that direction first. They offer a PPV site, as well as DVD sales. You buy packages of minutes here, and of course the more you spend, the better deal it is. $25 will get you 240 minutes of video, which seems like a decent deal for this kind of stuff. Otherwise, they're a pretty normal video site from what it looks like. Since it's PPV, you're free to browse around the site as much as you like to see what they offer.
The goods:
- Tons of content up. Anytime we're talking about DVD's numbering in the thousands, it's a big site. GameLink currently offers over 13,000 DVD's online, most available for PPV viewing of course, which is just a lot of content.
- They seem to be updating. Though there are no dates on anything, the content counts seem to grow. Adding some update info would be a good thing I'd think to help people know how new the movies are, and how often they're updating of course.
The bads:
- Quality varies, could be better. Their newer movies look decent, but apparently some movies are older and don't quite look as good. They're never bad necessarily, but not as good as other video sites at times.
- Some movies have no PPM option. If you're joining just to buy the package of minutes and use them up, not all scenes have that option available unfortunately. Some of them require either the $25 DVD purchase, or the $10-$20 scene purchase. It's tough to tell what they'll offer without hitting up the actual download page.
- Lots of ads to buy DVD's. You expect a few upsells of course to buy the DVDs, but you don't want to see too many of these after you've already paid to watch the streaming videos here. There were a few more ads than expected that you'll have to deal with here and there.
Conclusion:
As far as a PPV site goes, it's as good as the rest of them I'd say. The quality issues could hurt here and there, but it seems like they're getting better with the newer releases. Getting around is easy enough, and the videos play as expected. The main benefit of checking this site out over a generic DVD site is the selection, as hopefully they can get a few more studios involved with the PPV option. Otherwise, it's non-exclusive content, and you pay a bit more if you watch a lot of movies. It's a nice site at least, and another good option if you don't mind spending a little more.
