Ebony Max is another DVD site with a small twist in that they only feature movies in a certain niche; in this case that's ebony of course. From what I remember last time, it was good enough, but I didn't feel it was quite worth it in comparison to the generic DVD sites, where you can probably find a lot of this material as well. Of course I don't make a habit of trying to memorize every single DVD on a site, so it's entirely possible that by niching out (if that's even a word), they can give you a little more in-depth coverage of said niche. Either way, it's $25 to join, which is starting off not too bad, but a little on the high side.
The goods:
- Pretty large site. Not necessarily by DVD site standards, but their 136 DVD's online (each with multiple scenes) blow most paysites out of the water of course. You're talking at least 500 scenes online I'd guess.
- Updates regularly. The schedule isn't the best, but the updates look like they're consistent at least which is nice to see.
- Videos look decent. 640x480 1400kbps is the average that I saw, and while the specs are good but nothing great, I'd say the actual video quality looks a little better than expected. Again, it's better than some paysites, but there are other DVD sites that are better.
The bads:
- Not nearly as big as other DVD sites. Like I said earlier, 136 DVD's is great for a generic paysite, but there are other DVD sites they're in competition with that are much larger unfortunately. Add in the slightly slower updates, and I don't think they'll be catching up ever.
- Downloads were a bit slow, only one at a time. They came in about 1/4 of our normal speed for downloads. What made it worse was that my download accelerator didn't work, and you could only download one video at a time. You'll just have to be patient I guess, which kinda sucks on a site where the main goal is to download large video files.
- Updates are much slower than other DVD sites too. Once a week with a new DVD isn't bad at all, especially since it has 5-6 scenes on it probably. But when other DVD sites are putting up a new DVD daily, or sometimes as many as five DVD's daily, you're going to fall behind with this schedule.
Conclusion:
Against most paysites we look at, this site would really clean up I'd say. They offer a lot of content, they update regularly, the price isn't awful for what you get, and the videos look good. However, knowing there are other DVD sites out there doing so much better is what hurts them in the end. They have more content, more updates, more options, more features, and better quality at times. It's not a bad join at all, but make sure you won't get more from one of the higher-rated movie sites out there.
