899 Movies is up for review today, and it looks like a pretty standard DVD site. With over 3,000 DVD's in all sorts of categories, there's lots to see as expected. It doesn't really stand out in any way, though they do advertise the ability to make your own movie clip (custom start and stop points) pretty heavily, which should be fun. Otherwise, they used to charge $8.99 a month back in the day, hence the name, but now they charge $25 a month. How I miss the old times!
The goods:
- Lots of movies up. As with any DVD site out there, this one is good for tons of porn scenes. They have something like 3,400 DVD's online currently, each with several scenes of course. Do the math, and it's larger than most any other paysite you'll come across, save for other DVD sites of course.
- Updates do come. They're not necessarily regular, but I'd say you can expect a minimum of say 10 new DVD's per month. They seem to aim for four new DVD's per week, but can sometimes skip a week here and there. Older updates change a little bit as well, so I think it's always in flux.
- Custom clip is cool enough. On the one hand, we've seen this before on other DVD sites, but on the other hand, you can't discount it just for that reason. It lets you narrow the clip down a bit and make the download that much shorter.
The bads:
- Navigation could be better. First, they only let you browse through DVD's, and not by scene. It seems okay at first, but sometimes there's just one scene on that DVD that has the category you selected. The other four scenes don't, and are a waste to browse through. Second, you can't combine categories from what I can tell. Little touches like these just make it feel a little behind the top dogs.
- Only WMV videos. It probably has to do with the custom scene selector, but I hope you like Windows Media Videos. There aren't any other video types available, so you're out of luck if they don't work for you.
- Quality could be better. For a DVD site, which is based 100% on videos of course, I expect really good quality. They all get the same DVD's, so there's no reason why they can't have the same quality as everyone else. They just don't match up here, and need a big boost.
- Updates are a bit erratic. I mentioned the schedule a little earlier, but basically you just never know from one week to the next how many new DVD's are coming. They seem to aim for four new DVD's per week, but it changes a lot.
Conclusion:
899 Movies isn't bad, but there's really some decent room for improvement. The updates don't come as often, the quality isn't as good, and the options aren't as good as some of the better DVD sites. The price isn't any lower either these days, so it's just tough to know why you'd join here vs. somewhere else. It's a decent site on its own, but when you start comparing apples to apples, it just falls a little short.
