899 Movies is a DVD download site with an “open book” style guest tour that lets visitors get a complete feel for what’s available before joining. When it comes to movie sites like this I feel this is the best set-up since the content can sell itself if the collection contains the titles and performers that people want to see. The collection is a general hardcore DVD mix that covers all the niches you’d expect from a site of this kind with a whole bunch of studios represented.
The Goods:
- Lots of DVDs, Popular & Specialty Niches. The collection is quite large with the total number of movies reaching into the thousands. This is one of those sites where count does indeed reflect full-movies each of which contains multiple scenes which means they do well in terms of quantity. The niche categories cover a wide spectrum of porn and all the big popular sections are there along with some notable micro-niches that you don’t always see like Brazilian, classic, hooker, shaving, swingers, tattoo, and others.
- WMV Format, Custom Clip Segment Tool. The movie options are consistent with WMV as the format with files that can be downloaded or streamed. The custom clip tool is the single way to get the files as surfers select a start and end point for their clip and then are presented with the file to download. It’s easy enough to get an entire scene or any desired portion you want.
- Decent Browse Tools, Update/Vid File Info. 899’s navigation features are standard for a movie site in that it’s possible to browse by niche, studio, and performer name. There is also a keyword search tool. The individual movie pages have star and studio names that are hyperlinked for finding related content. Date-added update info is clearly posted for each item and the movie clip files have size in MB shown.
The Bads:
- Average Quality Videos, Just One Format. Aside from the custom clip builder the quality and options are pretty run-of-the mill. WMV is the only format which is unusual nowadays as the majority of movie download sites have multiple formats and including things like portable device and Flash. These guys do have three quality levels of WMV however the top quality is only average.
- Basic Design, Text-Only Model Index. For navigation the features are satisfactory in that they have the fundamentals in place but nothing more. With a sizable collection of thousands of movies there is room for more search and filter tools. The one specific item that needs improvement is the model list which is text-only without any preview pictures. That really does detract from the value of such a tool. The overall graphics and appearance of the site aren’t all that flashy either.
- Non-Exclusive Movies, Some Small Niches. The fact that the content is non-original is standard for DVD sites but still worth noting on a review like this. While exploring the different categories I see that some of the niches (and studios) have just a couple titles available. This may be something to explore for those who are focused on seeing a specific type of action.
Conclusion:
899 Movies is straightforward source of downloadable DVDs. The most notable attributes are the custom clip feature and the large number of titles, studios, and niches in the collection. Areas like video quality/formatting and site design are where they are doing enough to get by and are bit behind the curve when compared to some other movie sites. With the way the guest tour is presented you should be able to decide if they have what you’re looking for by spending a few minutes browsing around the different categories, studios, and updates.
